Mountain Biking A Fun and Challenging Sport

Mountain biking has grown to be a very popular sport in the past few years. There are many levels of you can pursue in this sport from joining a local club and riding on the weekends to full on racing competition with many classes for all ages, men and women , novice to expert. Mountain biking can be a somewhat expensive sport to get into but can be very exhilarating and rewarding. There's alot more to it than one might think. There are many obstacles one can encounter while riding a mountain trail. So for beginners it's a good idea to learn and practice some basic skills before hitting the trails.
Mountain bikes are very different from your standard bike as they are designed for riding in rough terrains. These bikes are designed to be very versatile and are able to ridden over rocky terrain, ruts and steep slopes. They are also very safe and comfortable and could be used for taking a bike ride with your family.There are several different types of mountain bikes to choose from.Cross country bikes are light and have little suspension which makes it easy for long rides. Other styles are free ride and downhill bikes that are used for racing steep inclines and descents. You will also find many different types of suspension on these bikes and many appear to have used technology developed for dirt bike riding and off road racing. Many mountain bikes now are full suspension bikes meaning they have a suspension system for the front and rear of the bike. Proper mountain bike suspension is critical to maintain optimum control while riding.Braking systems are also very high tech with disc brakes being very popular. Along with the expense of buying a mountain bike you also need to invest in some quality riding gear with a good helmet being at the top of your list. Todays helmets are designed to be comfortable and stylish. Some other accessories to consider are gloves. Mountain bike gloves are made of heavier material than road touring gloves, hand protection is important. Mountain bike shoes are designed to withstand the harsh backcountry terrain you will encounter.Proper clothing that is comfortable, able to protect you and withstand falls on rough terrain. It is also a good idea to carry some basic tools, a tire pump and an extra tube in case you have problems on the trail.
